“A slice of heaven on a hilltop”

Unique holiday accommodation in Central Portugal.

Quinta da Chumbaria – a slice of heaven on a hilltop…

Chumbaria is a small village situated in the rolling hills of Central Portugal, dating back many hundreds of years. We offer two unique and luxurious houses ready to welcome guests. They were originally used to store olive oil and house the oxen employed to work the land. Now they are fully renovated using hemp block insulation to provide a climate controlled, quiet and comfortable living space. In fact they are the first exposed hempcrete houses in Portugal, offering a taste of sustainable eco-building. Surrounded by stunning views and scenery, they are definitely one of a kind.

Steve and Sarah are the couple responsible for this restoration project and live at Chumbaria full time. Their story has featured in all 3 seasons of the popular television series ‘Help! We Bought a Village’ on Channel 4 UK TV. They moved to Portugal in 2020 to develop a life of regeneration and are bringing the village back to life, since it was abandoned in 1975. Using the ethics of permaculture to help them regenerate the land and learn to live a more simple way of life. They are delighted to be able to now share this amazing place with guests.

Situated halfway between Lisbon and Porto, finding Chumbaria is easy by car, bus or train. Just 40 minutes drive from the coast with breathtaking beaches, there are also many fascinating towns and cities to explore within a 60 minutes drive, as well as diverse local countryside offering some perfect places to experience nature, from hiking to swimming in the river beaches. The area has so much to offer…

Portugal has a unique charm, with a warm climate, friendly people, great food and good wine. It is known to be one of the most welcoming and safest family friendly countries on Earth. Whether you’re a frequent visitor, or new to Portugal, Central Portugal is an incredible place to explore and Chumbaria is a great base for adventures. As well as a unique space to simply stop, pause and reset your batteries.

We look forward to welcoming you for a relaxing or adventurous holiday, or maybe a bit of both, at our beautiful village Chumbaria.

This video logs the  beginning of our journey in 2019. Whilst Chumbaria was definitely unique we certainly had our work cut out! Take a look at our accommodation page to see what we’ve achieved in Phase 1 of our epic project.
