Volunteering at Chumbaria: A Global Exchange
Chumbaria, nestled amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Portugal, has become a haven for those seeking a harmonious connection with nature and a deeper understanding of sustainable living. Since 2021, we have welcomed a diverse group of 70 volunteers (not all at the same time!) from around the globe, each bringing their unique perspectives and skills to contribute to the project’s mission.
From the United States,Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Mexico, Brazil and the UK to Portugal and India to name just a few countries.
Volunteers of all ages have found a home at Chumbaria, some for a couple of weeks, some for months. Their dedication and enthusiasm have been instrumental in the project’s progress, as they have actively participated in a wide range of tasks. From land clearance, planting, weeding, watering, building raised beds, wood chopping, constructing our pergola and tree planting to building fences and composting, their contributions have been invaluable.
One of the primary avenues for attracting volunteers to Chumbaria has been through WWOOF Portugal. WWOOF, which stands for “Worldwide Work Opportunities on Organic Farms,” is a global network that connects organic farmers with volunteers who are willing to work in exchange for food and accommodation.
There are currently over 100 WWOOF projects in Portugal alone. This mutually beneficial arrangement provides volunteers with hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture and permaculture, while people such as ourselves, receive much-needed assistance.
At Chumbaria, volunteers have had the opportunity to learn about permaculture principles, which focus on creating sustainable and self-sufficient ecosystems.
They have gained practical skills in organic farming, composting, and ecological design, all while immersing themselves in our supportive and welcoming community.
Each volunteer who has passed through Chumbaria has left an indelible mark on the project. Their diverse backgrounds and experiences have enriched our project, fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas and perspectives.
Whether it’s sharing traditional recipes from their home countries or teaching new skills to their fellow volunteers, everyone has contributed to the unique character of Chumbaria.
In turn, volunteers have also taken away valuable knowledge and experiences. They have gained a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of nature and the importance of sustainable practices. Many have returned home inspired to implement permaculture principles in their own lives, spreading the message of ecological living.
We are very grateful for the countless individuals who have chosen to volunteer with us. Their dedication, enthusiasm, and contributions have been instrumental in our success. As Chumbaria continues to grow and evolve, we remain committed to providing a welcoming and enriching experience for future volunteers, fostering a global network of individuals who are passionate about sustainable living and a harmonious relationship with the Earth.
